Dry Mouth in Seniors: Causes, Risks, and What You Can Do

If your mouth feels dry, sticky, or parched much of the time — especially when you wake up in the morning — you’re not alone. Dry mouth affects a large percentage of older adults, and while it might seem like a minor nuisance, it can cause serious dental problems if left unaddressed.

What Is Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth, known medically as xerostomia, is the condition of not producing enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. Saliva is far more important than most people realize. It neutralizes the acids produced by bacteria in your mouth, washes away food particles, helps you taste and swallow, and contains minerals that protect your tooth enamel. When saliva production drops, the risk of tooth decay and gum disease rises significantly.

What Causes It?

Medications are the most common culprit. More than 400 commonly prescribed medications list dry mouth as a side effect. These include blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, antihistamines, diuretics, and many others. Older adults who take multiple medications are especially likely to experience chronic dry mouth.

Other causes include certain medical conditions (like diabetes, Sjögren’s syndrome, and autoimmune disorders), radiation therapy to the head or neck area, mouth breathing during sleep, and simple dehydration — which is very common among seniors.

The Dental Risks

Dry mouth accelerates tooth decay dramatically. Without saliva’s protective action, bacteria thrive and acids attack tooth enamel continuously. Cavities can develop in unusual places — around the gumline, at the edges of crowns and fillings, and on exposed root surfaces. These “root caries” are especially common in older adults with dry mouth.

Dry mouth also makes wearing dentures uncomfortable and can cause mouth sores where the denture rubs against dry tissue.

What Actually Helps

Staying well hydrated is the most important step — sip water frequently throughout the day. Sugar-free gum or candy can stimulate saliva production, as can xylitol-containing products. There are over-the-counter artificial saliva sprays and rinses that provide temporary relief. Alcohol-free fluoride mouthwash before bed can help protect teeth overnight.

If medications are the cause, talk to your doctor about whether alternatives exist — but never stop or change a medication without medical guidance.

How a Mobile Dentist Can Help

At your dental visit, your provider can assess the severity of your dry mouth, look for any early signs of decay that need to be addressed, and apply prescription-strength fluoride treatments that offer much stronger protection than over-the-counter products. For patients who can’t easily get to a dental office, having this care come to you makes staying on top of dry mouth-related problems much easier.
