Caregiver’s Guide to Managing Dental Care for a Loved One

If you’re caring for an aging parent, a spouse with a chronic illness, or a family member with disability, dental care is one of many responsibilities you’re juggling — and it’s easy for it to fall to the bottom of the list. This guide is for you: practical information on managing dental care for someone in your care, without making your already demanding life harder.

Start with a Dental Assessment

If your loved one hasn’t seen a dentist in a while — or if you don’t know when they last went — schedule a comprehensive exam as soon as practical. This gives you a baseline: what’s the current state of their oral health? Are there active problems that need treatment? What should you be monitoring going forward?

For many caregivers, a mobile dental assessment is the easiest starting point. You don’t need to arrange transportation; the dentist comes to you.

Build a Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

Consistent daily care — brushing at least twice a day, flossing or using a water flosser — prevents problems from developing in the first place. If your loved one can do this independently, great. If they need assistance or supervision, build it into the daily care routine. Tying it to something that already happens consistently (morning care, before bed) makes it easier to maintain.

For those with limited hand strength or coordination, electric toothbrushes with large handles are easier to manage. Adaptive grips are available at medical supply stores. If the person can’t cooperate with brushing, a small amount of fluoride gel applied with a finger or gauze provides partial protection.

Know the Warning Signs

Watch for any of the following and contact a dentist if you see them: swelling around the jaw or face, visible broken or missing teeth, refusal to eat or chewing on one side, increase in agitation or behavior changes (especially in dementia patients), persistent bad breath, or bleeding from the mouth. These can indicate pain or infection that needs prompt attention.

Keep a Dental Record

Maintain a simple document with your loved one’s dental information: their dentist’s name and contact, any known allergies, current medications (important for dental care), and dates of recent visits and procedures. This is invaluable if care is ever needed urgently or transferred to a new provider.
